Skull
and Bones
When
General Wolfe died in Quebec in 1759 the British cavalry
raised the 17th Light Dragoons in his memory, with a skull
and crossed bones as its badge. With the words 'Or Glory'
added below, this became known as the Motto: Death Or Glory.
|
|
In
1744 in the Prussian cavalry of Frederick the Great,
a full skeleton was chosen as the badge of the 8th Hussars.
Beneath it were the words Vincere
Aut Mori: Victory or Death. But
the 5th Hussars used a Totenkopf ('death's
head').

| The
17th Lancers, known as 'the Death or Glory boys', rode
in the Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854. Before the
Second World War the 17th was amalgamated with the 21st
to form the 17th/21st Lancers, keeping the Motto cap badge. |
|
In
the early days of the Nazi Party, Julius Schreck, leader
of the
Stabswache, Adolf Hitler's bodyguard unit, adopted
the
Totenkopf as its badge. When this unit later grew into
the Schutzstaffel (SS), it retained the Totenkopf. |

| Equipped
with Sherman tanks, the 17th/21st Lancers fought throughout
the North African and Italian campaigns as part of 6th
Armoured Division. In 1992 the regiment was amalgamated
with the 16th/5th Lancers to form The Queen's Royal Lancers,
and retained the Motto. |
|
The
elite SS Panzer-Division Totenkopf fought throughout
the Second World War. In the final months, Hitler moved
it repeatedly between the eastern and western fronts to
delay his defeat. When the division surrendered these
men were transported to the Soviet Gulag. |
